The family of a high school quarterback who collapsed on the field on Friday night has given an update on his health.
Pennsylvania football player Mason Martin, 17, suffered a ‘significant brain bleed’ and a collapsed lung after being hit during the game, leaving his life hanging in the balance.
The Karns City Gremlin Football page shared an update from the Martin family on Tuesday stating that in the past 24 hours, the young football player has moved his arms, slightly reacted to light and moved his legs when his toes were pinched.
His mother Stacy King Martin – who had been diagnosed with cancer herself – posted on Facebook: ‘This is the first positive step in an extremely long journey. The prayer vigils held at the hospital and at Karns City have overwhelmed us with joy and motivation.’
Mason’s mother also shared news that her son’s chest tube was removed, and his lung has recovered.

She ended her post with her son’s favorite bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 which represents God’s promise to give people future and hope.
This bible verse is loved by Martin so much that it is tattooed on his right thigh.
Though Martin kept playing after he got hit during the third quarter, his injuries caught up with him as Mike Vasbinder, the referee saw him staggering.
Vasbinder blew his whistle to stop the game as Martin fell to the ground.
Everyone in the stands and on the field immediately took a knee in honor of Martin and started to pray for him.
He was soon taken off the field in an ambulance before he was flown to UMPC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
His mother’s initial Facebook post said: ‘Mason remains in critical condition with little change over the last 36 hours. The truth is we need a miracle. I’m not saying that to sound grim, but to let you know that we need the strength of your prayers.’
That post was also signed off with the same bible verse.
Martin scored his team’s only touchdown in Friday’s game according to D9 Sports.
Friends and family held two vigils for Martin, one outside the hospital on Saturday and one on Sunday night at Diehl Stadium.

Spectator Brittany Thompon who was at the vigil outside of UMPC Presbyterian told the Butler Eagle that Martin’s accident reminded her of Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin’s field collapse.
Vasbinder, the referee also thought of Damar Hamlin when he saw Martin go down in front of him.
‘You see the way it ended with Mr. Hamlin, so we’re praying the same thing is going to happen for Mason Martin as well,’ said Vasbinder.
‘Mason Strong’ hashtags were shared on social media and were displayed on purple and yellow signs at the vigils.
A GoFundMe fundraiser was set up for the family and according to Penn Live it has an original goal of $5,000 but closed on Monday after it reached a staggering $14,000.
